A TRUE SECRET of Innovation Success | Driving Eureka! #10

Everywhere I go people are talking about needing to accelerate their innovation projects. This week my lead article is on the importance of a smart Data Capture system.   Some may think of Data Capture as BORING however as you will learn - it’s a critical tool for accelerating innovation speed.

The Driving Eureka! Book excerpt is about the need to educate others in your new innovation mindset.

The Craft cocktail is the Solstice Sling - a genuine original winter cocktail that is both classy and elegant.

Data Capture:
A Secret to Agile Innovation Success

For those who are new to innovation, Data Capture might seem boring.  However, to those who get their hands dirty turning ideas into reality it is a critical driver of Innovation Speed & Success.

Data Capture is your system for innovation project data management. The Data I’m talking about is the output of thousands of decisions that your teams make as they turn ideas into reality. Innovation Project data includes: product/service specifications, formulas, regulatory data, packaging copy, instructions, bill of materials, costing data, marketing investment plan, sales materials, and distribution goals.

Importantly - much of the data associated with innovations is not “static." As ideas change and evolve, teams find themselves revising previous decisions and the data associated with them.

In most organizations project data is dispersed and housed across departmental silos - regulatory holds regulatory data, finance holds finance data, etc. The result is slower speed for changes. And data mistakes. At one company they found that over 97% of projects had a critical error in the final “data package” associated with projects.

The management of data is so important that the Eureka! Ranch team has spent months developing and testing an advanced data capture system. It’s called:

Trailblazer DATA CAPTURE  is an online system for gathering and sharing innovation project data that is built into the Trailblazer project management software.  It replaces dozens of forms and spreadsheets with one interactive workbook that is updated on a real time basis. The workbook is dynamic and fully customizable to match existing forms - WITH NO CUSTOM PROGRAMMING REQUIRED.

Innovation teams realize greater speed because there is no chasing down files or confusion on version numbers. Even more importantly there is greater alignment with support teams and partners - as the Trailblazer Data Capture system includes clarity on the Strategic Mission (Blue Card), Customer Offering (Yellow Card) and Business Model (Risk Adjusted Math Game Plan).

Driving Eureka! How Could they Know

Driving Eureka! Book Excerpt
How Could They Know?

As you embark on the journey of Driving Eureka! you will find that you start seeing the world in a new way. Problems become opportunities to innovate. A mindset of “If it’s not broke don’t fix it” is replaced with a never-ending passion for discovering ideas, methods, and tools for working smarter.

As your mindset changes you are likely to find that your new thinking conflicts with others. You will become frustrated that they don’t embrace and celebrate your new courage and confidence to use innovation to work in smarter ways.

A fundamental belief within the Innovation Engineering community is that people are fundamentally good. We believe that the naysayers you interact with are not against change or Innovation Engineering. They just don’t understand it. They can’t imagine that innovation could be a reliable science instead of a random gamble. It was the same with Dr. Deming’s efforts in the eighties. When asked if executives were doing enough to apply his teaching, his response would be loud and on the verge of belligerent:

“Managers don’t know about it. How could they know? How could they know there was anything to learn? How could they? How could they? How could they know there was any other way to manage?”

Quite simply, most adults think that ideas are magical and only randomly reveal themselves to so-called special people. How could they know that everyone can add value and make a difference if they are simply taught how to think quicker, faster, and more creatively.

How could they, or you, know? Until recently there were no courses available in System Driven Innovation. The good news is that now you can learn how to use systems thinking to enable you and your organization to innovate faster and with less risk. Not only can you learn it—you can master it.
